ASTIGMATISM IOL
TORIC INTRAOCULAR LENSES
Astigmatism means that the front surface of the eye (the cornea) is shaped like a
football instead of a baseball – it has two curves – one longer that the other. Because
the eye is only able to focus one curve at a time, the other curve is out of focus. The
word astigmatism comes from the Latin “a” meaning without and “stigma” meaning point
– without a focus point! Having cataract surgery when there is a significant corneal
astigmatism is best corrected by a TORIC astigmatism corrective lens.
