Cataracts occur when the natural lens of your eye becomes clouded.
Usually cataracts develop gradually over time as the natural proteins of the eye structure clump together and cause vision to become hazy.
Almost everyone over the age of 60 gets cataracts. It is a normal part of aging.
Unless the condition is advanced, or complicated by other factors, cataracts are easily treatable.
Symptoms
Gradual changes in vision, frequent changes of glasses prescriptions, fluctuations in visual acuity, dulled color vision, sensitivity to light, and haziness or halos around objects are all symptoms of cataracts. Because they develop gradually, patients often don’t notice the condition in its earlier stages. However, advanced stages of cataracts can pose serious risk. That is why regular vision checkups, especially in patients over 40, are highly recommended.
Diagnosis
Our doctors perform a painless dilated examination and evaluation of the eye to determine the severity of any cataract and overall health of the optic nerve. We then recommend appropriate treatment options for your condition and lifestyle requirements.
Treatment
Surgery to remove the affected lenses is the only way to permanently treat cataracts and halt a progressive decline in vision. During the procedure, each clouded lens is replaced with a small, thin, plastic intraocular lens (IOL) that allows you to see and focus clearly again.
Safety and Success
Cataract surgery is the safest and most successful eye procedure performed today. It is done on an outpatient basis and usually requires only a few minutes from start to finish. Your eye will be treated with anesthetic prior to the procedure so you will feel little, if any, discomfort. Recovery is rapid and requires prescription eye drops to guard against infection during the brief healing process.
